The Hacienda Mission San Luis Rey

This senior living community is uniquely situated on the historic grounds of Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside, California. The architectural and interior design concept was inspired by the Mission’s Spanish Colonial architecture, honoring the site’s cultural and historical significance.
Led by Lisa Klang, the design team sought to carry the Spanish Colonial influence seamlessly throughout the interior architecture and design. From the moment residents and visitors enter the lobby, they are immersed in a warm, timeless Spanish Colonial atmosphere that flows through the discovery living room and into the library.
The interiors feature a carefully curated palette of natural materials and architectural details, including French limestone flooring, a precast stone fireplace, Spanish accent tile, and paneled wood walls. These elements were selected to evoke a sense of authenticity, warmth, and permanence while supporting a comfortable and welcoming environment for residents.
As the Interior Designer, I was involved in the project from initial concept through completion. In my role as Project Manager, I coordinated the interior design construction drawings for submittals, participated in weekly consultant and client meetings, and collaborated closely with the architectural team and general contractor to ensure clear communication and alignment throughout the construction process.
Like many large-scale commercial projects, challenges arose during the construction phase. As Project Manager, I conducted regular job site visits to collaborate directly with the contractor team and address issues in real time, ensuring design intent and project momentum were maintained.
A key priority throughout the project was ADA compliance, given the needs of the senior living residents. The Klang & Associates design team developed thoughtful, integrated design solutions that met all ADA requirements without compromising the overall Spanish Colonial aesthetic—successfully balancing functionality, safety, and timeless design.
The project was successfully completed two months ahead of schedule, reflecting strong coordination, efficient project management, and effective collaboration across all teams.
